A Portland Place to Be

October 19, 2017    |   Panny Antoniou

Portland Place has a long and famous history and is one of the most well-known streets in the Marylebone area.

Located in the heart of Marylebone, the street was first laid out in the Georgian era by Robert and James Adams for the Duke of Portland, which is where the area gets its name. Known as a very wide street by Central London standards, this is due to Lord Foley who once owned a mansion at the top of the street and used his considerable political influence to ensure that the view from his house was protected and could not be interfered with. The result is one of the most iconic streets in London, containing a number of notable landmarks, from the Portland Stone façade and bronze doors of the Royal Institute of British Architects, to the Chinese Embassy which sits opposite.

As well as being incredibly historic, the street is also very well-located for a variety of amenities including bars, shops, and a fantastic public transport network. From The Artesian, with over 50 varieties of rum, to the Albany Pub which features a wide variety of beers, there are nightlife destinations to suit all tastes. The shops in the area are also fantastic and you will be spoilt for choice, a short walk from Oxford Street, Marylebone High Street, and world-renowned department store Selfridges, you will never be short of shopping destinations.

In addition, the street is near a variety of different modes of public transport, from the many bus routes going through nearby Oxford Street, to the tube stations including Oxford Circus, Regents Park, and Great Portland Street which are just a stone’s throw away. With the implementation of the Night Tube on weekends, and the new Elizabeth Line which is opening in 2018 you can ensure that you will never be stranded when you make this luxurious part of London your home.

Here at Robert Irving Burns, we are delighted to market a beautifully presented two-bedroom apartment on this famous street with natural light throughout and views of the tree-lined Portland Square.
