St John’s Wood received its name from the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem who owned the land in medieval times. Once building began in the early 19^th century, architects were hoping to emulate the pastoral charm that had once existed in the area. Italian-style villas and Victorian homes emerged, and as such, the village of St John’s Wood took shape.

By the 1960s, many parts of St John’s Wood were designated Conservation Areas, and many properties still retain their original exteriors and core designs as heritage sites.
